In somewhat unusual crime news, the popular El Gato cafe was robbed in the early morning hours, but that's not the most interesting part of the story. Because of the open gate and broken window, six of the 10 rescue cats that are housed at the cafe escaped. All but one of the cats were recovered the next day as the search for Wink continued. The cafe's owner was alerted by their landlord who noticed an unknown male looking for a way to enter the cafe at around 4:00 a.m as shown on surveillance cameras. In addition to the cats, money was missing from both the register and the tip jar. Police are now in possession of the surveillance video.
The last of the missing adoptable cats at El Gato was surrendered by her owners due to Hurricane Harvey, making this story even more heartbreaking. Volunteers are confident that they will find the missing meower soon! Escaping cats may not be a common problem for North Houston business owners, but robberies are.
