Employee Theft: 5 Things You Need to Know

Theft and fraud cost companies millions each year. How to prevent your employees from walking off with office supplies, merchandise, trade secrets, and even cold hard cash. If you’re not worried about the potential for employee theft and fraud in your small business, perhaps you should be. According to a 2008 report by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the median loss by businesses with less than 100 employees was $200,000 per incident. And if that weren’t bad enough, the problem only grows in a weak economy. “Employee theft always gets worse in bad economic times,” says Timothy Dimoff, founder and president of SACS Consulting & Investigative Services in Akron, Ohio. “Some employees may steal more to survive, but often the larger reason is that they steal because they feel a sense of entitlement to make up for a lack of compensation they believe they should be receiving.” Some steal cash or data; others lift items that fit into their handbags or briefcases, such as office supplies, gadgets and USB drives. How can you protect your company? Here are five essential tips for entrepreneurs. Employee Theft: 5 Things You Need to Know – AOL Small Business Don’t miss out! Free Seminar event. Aler Officer Stops Theft

Security Officer Joseph Cinquina was returning from an extensive internal patrol at a large manufacturing facility on December 26th, when he realized something just wasn’t right. With seven (7) years of experience at this plant located in a suburb of Cincinnati, he instinctively knew there was something missing. Upon investigating, Joe not only identified what was out of place, he spotted a would-be thief inside of the plant that he was protecting! Officer Cinquina followed Post Order instructions to the letter and immediately contacted 911 and local authorities, as well as a sequence of Client and I.S.S. management representatives. The police arrived in minutes and it was discovered that a number of valuable items had been carefully staged for removal through a rear access point. There was no question that his diligence and quick action prevented significant loss for our client. As a result of this incident, the client has taken additional steps to better secure the property. Based on the recommendations of Site Supervisor James Heller, Operations Manager Adam Smith proudly selected Officer Joseph Cinquina as our Cincinnati Branch Officer of the...
