Further your skills Georgia has two types of security guard positions available – armed guards and unarmed guards. We covered what is required for unarmed guards in this post. Unarmed guards are different than armed guards because they do not carry a weapon while providing observe and report security services. Since a weapon is used with armed guards, more training and supervision is needed to make sure that these individuals are equipped to deal with all situations.  In this post, we provide more detail on what training is needed for a Georgia armed security guard. Georgia Armed Security Guard In addition to the 24 hour course requirement for unarmed security guards, armed security guards are required to complete at least 15 course hours of further education from a board-licensed instructor. Classes that instruct handgun use will cover topics like use of deadly force, de-escalation procedures, self defense, active shooter training, ballistics and weapon safety, and range training/practice. After completing the additional 15 course hours, there are two tests that must be passed in order to be eligible for your Georgia armed security guard license. The first test is a written exam. The second is a test that requires firing the weapon at the gun range. Both of these tests require a minimum score of 80% in order to be considered “passing.” It is important to note that you must have the type of weapon you plan to use as a guard at the range for your firing test. If you live in the Peach State, there are several different steps that need to be completed before you can become a security guard. Once you pass these steps, you can begin your career as a guard. There are two tests – once for carrying a weapon and one for basic security. Below, we will talk about the basic Georgia security guard license. This blog post covers the requirements for armed security guards in Georgia.   Georgia Security Guard License – Unarmed In order to successfully be trained as an unarmed guard in Georgia, individuals must complete a program that consists of at least 24 hours of course content on security guards. Topics include things like private security, legal aspects of security, observation/patrol techniques, first aid, reporting incidents and customer service. Additionally, it is required that the course is taught by an instructor who has a valid Georgia state certification to teach security guard classes. Typically, this is someone with a law enforcement or supervisory background. After successfully completing this training, it’s time to get your license! The training center will have more information on what exactly is needed, but you will most certainly need to pass a background check and provide fingerprints to make sure that you do not have a criminal background.
